BOOK REVIEW AND NEW PUBLICATIONS

BOOK REVIEW:
Amore by Rinaldo Hopf. Art direction & co-editing, Sven Barletta. Tübingen: Konkursbuch Verlag Claudia Gehrke, 2006. 109 p. ISBN 3-88769-354-X ISBN-13 978-3-88769-354-1

Frank peers at us from the front cover of Amore with a twinkle in his eyes and an earring in his ear. His bent right leg frames the left side of the picture with his hand holding it up. The camera loves him. It turns out that Frank is photographer Rinaldo Hopf’s 11-year partner. Most of the photos in the book have Frank as the subject, many outside. The cover picture is dated 1995 and in the full reproduction inside, we find that Frank’s privates are spilling out of his cutout jeans. The twinkle is still in his eye and the title is “Join me!”

The photos date from 1995 to 2006 and show Frank over the dozen years as he matures. He reveals his body and his personality comes along. One can feel the love of the book’s title.

The book is introduced by essays in German and English by Matthias Herrmann and Mario Wirz. Each describes how the photographs show Hopf’s desire and love. Both are palpable.

The book is well produced, in hard covers; most of the illustrations are in color.
