Caravaggio: painter of miracles
by Francine Prose
(New York: HarperCollins, 2005)

Francine Prose’s short biography of Caravaggio (1571-1610) in the Eminent lives series is a delight to read. She vigorously evokes the beauty and mastery of the paintings, making them come alive. About halfway through, I got out my copy of an inexpensive illustrated paperback on Caravaggio to saturate the senses with a bit of visual confirmation of the verbal descriptions: not because I needed it but because the verbal enticement was strong.

At the same time, Prose provides a contextual setting and does it well, telling a solid story of teachers, patrons, and companions. Caravaggio was famous during his lifetime not only for his rambunctious life but also as an influence on other Italian and Flemish painters. His reputation was eclipsed for sev eral centuries before rising again in the 20th century; some of his great detractors have all put disappeared. One of these was Giovanni Baglione. Prose says “to contemplate the work of Giovanni Baglione alongside that of Caravaggio restores our faith in the hopeful clichés that promise that posterity will prove wiser and clearer-sighted than the myopic present. Time will separate the wheat from the chaff. Cream will rise to the top even if it takes centuries to complete its erratic and uncertain percolation” (p. 89).

Prose’s descriptions of Caravaggio’s interest in young men are also well put and matter-of-fact. She mentions rather casually the potential frisson between t he older aristocrat and a young page boy depicted in the “Portrait of Alof de Wignacourt” (Louvre, ca. 1608). Much has been written about the imposition of modern concepts of sexuality on artists from earlier times. Regardless, Prose winningly describes Caravaggio’s use of young male models including his roommate Mario Minniti and his relations with patrons, some of whom might now be said to be running a gay salon.

While this book is clearly aimed at the general reader without footnotes or other scholarly apparatus beyond a basic bibliography, it provides a good read about an artist we now claim for the homosexual canon.
