CAUCUS NEWS

Letter from the Caucus Co-Chairs

This February’s CAA brings our tenure as co-chairs of the Caucus to a close. We’d like to thank Sherman, Tee, Sallie, and all the others who have worked so hard for the Caucus on committees and in other ways. We’ve come pretty far. This year’s annual meeting will include two Caucus related sessions -- one on post-queer identity and the other on the nude -- in addition to a lunchtime session and the many individual speakers addressing queer issues within other panels. For the old-timers among us, who doubtless remember, as we do, entire Annual Meetings without a single utterance of LGBTQ import, this is evidence of the centrality of this organization to the changing face of our discipline.

We’d also like to remind you that the Caucus runs on collective decision-making and volunteer labor. So please consider how you might like to get involved. Come to the business meeting in Philly if you can, Thursday at 12:00 noon or get in touch about how you want to help, or if you want to know more about what all these positions and committees involve. We know you’re busy. We’re busy, too. We want to/have to work, study, think, make art, make text, look back, around, forward, affirm/pursue/honor life and art, pleasure and passion, justice and peace, We think the Caucus is part of the picture.

Note from the editors

As we started to compile this issue of the newsletter, it was with excitement about the new season in the galleries and the new academic year. That excitement was mostly torn asunder by the terrible events of September 11th but we know that we will still find -- will have to find -- solace in the arts and in our interaction with colleagues, friends, and family. The eyes are dulled and the senses are numbed by the enormity of tragedy and the tears of grief. Now, just a few days after the 11th, the calls for retribution and heightened security ring loud. It is our fervent desire that peace and civil rights are not overwhelmed by these calls.
