Lambda Literary Awards

Pictures and passions: a history of homosexuality in the visual arts by James M. Saslow is gathering attention from the queer literary establishment. Shortlisted for the Publishing Triangle’s Gran-Shilts Gay Nonfiction Award, it has also been nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in two categories: Photography/Visual Arts and Gay Studies.

Designed to honor excellence in queer publishing, the Lammy awards were established in 1988. Photography/Visual Arts was added as a category in 1994. Art books competing with Pictures and passions are The drag king book by Del LaGrace Volcano and Judith “Jack” Halberstam, The homoerotic art of Pavel Tchelitchev by David Leddick, John Singer Sargent by John Esten & Donna Hassler, and Strange sisters by Jaye Zimet.

The Lammies will be given out in Chicago June 1st at a dinner ceremony (always a gala and not inexpensive event) immediately preceding Book Expo America. BEA is the largest U.S. gathering of book publisher, bookstore personnel, and related professionals.

Art book titles which have won in the past are: Family by Nancy Andrews (HarperSanFrancisco), Paris Was A woman by Andrea Weiss (HarperSanFrancisco), Nothing but the girl by Susie Bright & Jill Posener (Cassell), Naked men: pioneering male nudes 1935-1955, David Leddick, editor (Universe Publishing), The male nude by David Leddick (Taschen), and Women in love by Barbara Seyda & Diana Herrera (Bulfinch/Little Brown).
