The subdivision --Art can function as either a form or a topical subdivision. As a form subdivision, it's used for works that consist of reproductions of art works; as a topical subdivision, it's used for works about art. In the lists of free-floating subdivisions in the Subject Cataloging Manual and in Free-Floating Subdivisions: An Alphabetical Index, subdivisions that can function as forms are coded $v with the proviso that they may also be coded as $x when assigned to works about the form.

There are two subdivision authority records for --Art, one as a form subdivision and the other as a topical subdivision. They were both created in the initial part of LC's project to create subdivision authority records. The authority record for --Art as a form (185 $v) is LCCN is sh 99001267. Its scope note says to use --Art as a form subdivision under names of individual persons who lived before 1400, and under names of deities and legendary figures for collections of art depicting the person, deity, or figure. The authority record for --Art as a topical subdivision (180 $x) is LCCN sh 99001934. Its scope note says to use --Art as a topical subdivision under the same categories of headings for works about art depicting the person, deity, or figure.

LC's project to create subdivision authority records is not yet complete; we are about two-thirds of the way through it. We plan to focus on creating the remaining subdivision records when the pinyin conversion project of subjects is completed shortly. When the subdivision authority record project is complete, there will be matching form (185) and topical (180) authority records for those subdivisions that can function as either forms or topics.
