Digital Library Federation Electronic Resource Management Initiative (Friday p.m.)

The initiative is looking at resource discovery, license terms, access, renewal date alerting, and problem tracking. Since development of appropriate means to manage ERs is difficult, collaboration is vital. The goals are to describe the architectures, establish a list of elements, develop an XML schema and DTD, and promote best practices. All DLF programs have deliverables and here they are: problem roadmap, workflow diagram, functional specifications, entity-relationship diagram (source for building a relational database), list of data elements with definitions and functionalities, and XML schemas. They said to search “web hub” on Google to find the initiative’s site. Several libraries are working on methods for managing ERs and one big problem is finding the perfect identifier for a work -- ISSNs are only relevant for serials and are not assigned to all ERs, Open URLs provide good access but may change. The International Standard Text Code (ISTC) came up here and in a MARBI discussion of Discussion paper 2003-DP03.
